In early 2013 a new trend came into the spotlight. In East Asia, teens are buying ‘non-medical’ or fake braces off the black market for around $100! Braces or any type of dental care are considered a status symbol and luxury. It’s not a normal part of ‘teen life’ in Thailand, Malaysia, or Indonesia to get real orthodontic braces because not many families can afford them. The fake braces can be purchased online, in beauty salons, or local markets. The teen will then glue them on their teeth at home. The wires that come with the fake braces may contain lead, which can cause serious illness or death. There have been fatalities in Thailand from complications of this current fad. Online sites warn using these fake braces for a maximum of five months. Because of this, it is against the law for people who either produce or sell these braces. The punishment could be up to 6 months in prison and a $1,300 fine. Is keeping up with the Jones’ worth teens getting sick or dying? As the saying goes, “Follow Your Own Stars” -Anonymous
