Summertime is right around the corner.
Adjusting to life with braces can be challenging, but having time to get used to them helps make going back to school that much easier. Because of this, we often encourage students to begin orthodontic treatment during the summer months.
When deciding if your child is ready to begin the journey to a beautiful smile, consider these reasons.
#1: School is Out
Making it into the office for regular visits can be a challenge during the school year. With fewer daytime activities taking place during the summer, scheduling and attending appointments is easier for you and your kids.
Starting braces during the summer allows a few months to adjust so your child feels comfortable before going back to school in the fall.
We also know school can sometimes be overwhelming, and we want orthodontic treatment to be stress-free. Fewer homework assignments and projects makes adapting to life with braces easier.
#2: Establish Healthy Food & Drink Habits Independently
Healthy eating habits are important to maintaining your oral health.
It is easier to adopt new eating and drinking habits before school lunches, holidays, and other events tempt your student to ignore their new routines.
Increased time at home also means more influence on your child’s diet. Emphasizing fruits, vegetables, and water and limiting sticky foods and sugary drinks, will help your child form positive habits.
#3: Take Time to Develop an Oral Care Routine
Braces can easily catch food particles and bacteria which turn into plaque. If plaque is not removed it can harden and form tartar which may contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.
A good oral care routine is a must, and it can take time for your child to adjust to their braces.
Without the morning rush, students will have free time to establish an effective cleaning routine, for example, learning to floss with threaders and brushing more frequently.
#4: Start Now & Finish Sooner
Getting braces once school is out helps your child or teen get a beautiful smile sooner. At Fry Orthodontics, we’ll work with your schedule to get treatment started whenever you’re ready.
With an average treatment time of 16 months, your child can get braces as soon as school gets out and finish their orthodontic treatment before or during the first semester of the following year.
If they’re thinking about braces, we can plan their treatment schedule in relation to senior pictures and other school activities to make sure they finish school confidently with a smile they love.
