How to Prevent Gum Inflammation With Braces

Posted On: January 11, 2018

Braces help create a beautiful smile you’ll have for the rest of your life. Maintaining excellent oral care is essential, but some individuals wearing braces may be more susceptible to gum swelling and inflammation. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking after your mouth and gums.

Cleaning Challenges

Once you get braces, it can be a little harder to clean your teeth properly. Braces can easily catch food particles and bacteria which turn into plaque. If plaque is not removed it can harden and form tartar which may contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

What is Gingivitis

To make sure your gums stay healthy both during and after braces, it’s important to be aware of the contributing factors which can lead to gingivitis. Some people are more susceptible to gingivitis than others. Smoking, diabetes and genetic history can put you at greater risk for developing gingivitis. Other risk factors include jaw conditions, teeth grinding or a misaligned bite.

Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease, caused by bacteria inflaming the gums. If gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to periodontitis, a more serious infection which can damage your gums and jawbone. While there are more than three million cases of periodontitis in the United States each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates half of American adults suffer from gum disease.

Ways to Prevent Gum Swelling

  • Floss teeth daily and take your time. If you are wearing metal or ceramic braces, try a floss threader. Flossing above the wire line of your braces is essential and may take some practice.
  • Use a soft-bristled tooth brush twice a day.
  • Use water or mouth wash to rinse after brushing teeth.
  • Schedule dental check-ups every six months, or more often if you are experiencing issues with gum inflammation.
