As the journey to achieving a healthy, beautiful smile begins – you may notice a few, small “bumps” or canker sores, along the way. But no worries! This is completely normal when you are wearing braces for the first time.
What are Canker Sores?
Canker sores are small lesions which form inside the mouth, cheeks, or lips, at the base of the gums, and under the tongue.
Sometimes, individuals may experience the onset of a canker sore developing by feeling a burning or tingling sensation inside the mouth. Once a canker sores emerge, they appear as a round, white or grey sore.
Why Do Canker Sores Develop with Braces?
A few days after braces are placed on the teeth, you may notice a slight discomfort. This is because the mouth needs an adjustment period to get use to the braces. For example, canker sores may develop if you accidentally bite the inside of your cheek or tongue, or if any wires break or become loose and rub again your cheeks or tongue.
How to Treat Canker Sores with Braces
While canker sores may cause irritation, it’s important to continue practicing a good oral health routine, including regular brushing and flossing. To help soothe irritation, consider these tips:
- Salt Water Rinse
Put about a pinch of salt in a cup of warm water and rinse several times. Repeat as needed to alleviate the discomfort. - Eat Soft Foods
Avoid salty, spicy, and acidic foods. Instead, try eating only soft foods like mashed potatoes or shakes for a day or two. - Consider Over the Counter Medicine
Pain relievers such as Tylenol or Advil, or topical treatments, like Ambesol, can help relieve discomfort. Follow the recommended dosage on the package. - Wax
If any of your braces are poking out or causing pain, place a piece of wax over the area. Dental wax is available at our offices and also at many pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS.
