Whoopi Goldberg Speaks about Preventing Gum Disease

Posted On: April 18, 2017

Popular American talk show, “The View” has tapped into an issue that has generated much buzz in the dental world. One of the four hosts, Whoopi Goldberg, shared a very real experience with the viewers in 2016 about gum disease.

“For years and years, I let my mouth go and I am now paying the price,” Goldberg stated. She is now using her platform as a way to spread the message that gum disease is easily prevented.

Periodontal disease occurs when plaque and bacteria begin accumulating underneath the gum line. Eventually, this can cause gum disease, also known as gingivitis. If gingivitis is not taken seriously, the bacteria may eventually infect the bone and cause periodontitis, which is irreversible. This is exactly what Goldberg was speaking about while on air. Her experience with this disease is one that is very common in the United States, but often not talked about.

Can poor oral hygiene affect my health?

Until going through this, Whoopi did not understand the relationship between poor oral hygiene and overall health. According to Delta Dental, recent studies prove that if you have gum disease, you’re at greater risk for heart disease than someone with healthy gums. The answer behind why this happens is simple, bacteria spreads. When this bacteria reaches an area of the body that has been damaged, it often attaches and causes inflammation. This can result in cardiovascular conditions as well as strokes. The heart is often times the most affected by gum disease because of the transfer of blood throughout the body.

How do I know if I have gum disease?

Signs of gingivitis include swollen or puffy gums, bleeding gums, or receding gum lines. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be caused by poor oral hygiene, or neglecting your 6 month dental cleanings. Whoopi herself had great dental insurance, but never used it because she thought her teeth were “fine.” The advice she gives in the video below is important for all of us to hear.
