How Much Do Braces Cost? Factors that Affect the Price of Orthodontic Treatment
If you or your child are considering orthodontic treatment, one of the first questions that likely comes to mind is, “How much do braces cost?” The cost of braces can vary widely depending on several factors, and it’s essential to understand these factors to make an informed decision about your orthodontic treatment. In this blog, we’ll explore the factors that affect the price of orthodontic treatment and provide insights into what you can expect when it comes to the cost of braces.
Types of Treatments and Factors Affecting the Cost of Braces
The type of braces you choose can significantly impact the cost of orthodontic treatment.
Traditional metal braces are usually the most affordable option, followed by ceramic braces (clear or tooth-colored brackets). Invisalign®, a clear aligner system, tends to be among the more expensive options. However, at Fry Orthodontics, all of these are very affordable. In fact, we offer these treatments at the same price!
The complexity of your orthodontic needs and your personal preferences will influence which type of braces you select. Need help deciding between these options? Check out our blog, “Invisalign vs. Braces: Which Is Right for You?”
Orthodontist’s Experience and Location
Another factor affecting the cost of braces is the experience and expertise of the orthodontist you choose. Orthodontists with extensive experience and a reputable track record may charge higher fees.
Additionally, the cost of living in your area can impact orthodontic prices. In urban areas or regions with a higher cost of living, orthodontic treatment may be more expensive than in rural areas.
Patient’s Age and Unique Circumstances
We are often asked, “How much do braces cost?” If it were a simple question, we’d have a simple, blanket-statement answer. However, in addition to the factors listed above, there are also individual concerns to keep in mind when assessing orthodontic solutions. Braces and Invisalign are tailor-made orthodontic treatments exclusive to each individual patient. Consider the following factors when evaluating your needs:
Age of the Patient
Orthodontic treatment costs can vary based on the age of the patient. Treatment for children and teenagers may differ from that for adults, as adult orthodontic cases often involve more complex issues. This can affect the overall cost of your treatment.
In some cases, Phase I and Phase II braces are needed. This refers to a specific treatment plan in which the patient will end up having braces twice in order to get straight teeth.
For example, if someone is young, between seven and 10 years old, and has a certain bite problem that could get progressively worse without early treatment, an orthodontist will recommend an early set of braces to help fix the bite problem. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of a crossbite, overbite, underbite, or harmful oral habits. This is Phase I, which is considered “interceptive orthodontics”. After a short time, the braces will be removed, and the teeth will grow naturally.
Once most of the permanent teeth are in place, usually between the ages of 11-13, Phase II, which is considered “comprehensive” orthodontics, begins with a full set of braces.
Treatment Duration and Additional Procedures
The length of your orthodontic treatment can also influence the overall cost. The complexity of your orthodontic issues, such as the severity of misalignment, can impact the duration of treatment. For some patients, additional procedures may be necessary before or during orthodontic treatment. This could include the need for extractions, jaw surgery, or other specialized treatments. These additional procedures can significantly increase the overall cost of your orthodontic care.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment can take several years. However, at Fry Orthodontics, our average treatment time is 16 months.
Insurance Coverage
Dental insurance plans often provide some coverage for orthodontic treatment, but the extent of coverage varies widely. Some plans may cover a portion of the cost, while others may cover most of it. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage and any limitations or requirements.
